A recent inspection has discovered serious structural issues with the roof on the Beeton Memorial Area.
Doubts raised about how much longer the town of New Tecumseth can safely operate the aging facility have forced members of Council to decide that closing the 76 year old building would be the safest option.
At the July 10th meeting New Tecumseth Council members heard 5 structural assessments have been performed on the facility since 1992 and the roof has already been replaced on building.
In 2021, a NEW arena was estimated to cost approximately $30 million.
To keep costs down, one of the repair options would be reinforcement bracing at anywhere between $150,000 to $300,000.
Another option included the bracing PLUS columns, beams and a wall system, with a price tag of $755,000.
Staff say the weight of snow and ice buildup on the roof means the building should not be used during the winter months.
The last option posed by staff was to close the arena.
That is set to happen in October of this year.
