Police are warning residents to make sure you know who you are communicating with online before you start sending money.
This after two residents lost several thousand dollars, believing they were chatting with celebrities.
South Simcoe Police indicate this latest scam preys on fans of celebrities by the fraudster posing as their favorite actor or musician, then after gaining trust asking for money.
The victims are told the cash would be intended for use in a charity or meet-n-greet events.
Investigators say there a few things you can do to make sure you don’t fall victim.
1 – Don’t share personal information with people you don’t know.
2 – Never send money to an unknown account.
3 – Be wary of any message sent to you personally from a celebrity.
4 – If you do intend to open it, Google the celebrities name with the word “Scam” in the search bar to see if they are linked to impostor scams.
Police say if you think you have been scammed, contact them and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
