Today marks the end of National Cervical Cancer Awareness Week (oct21-25)
Dr. Robert Di Cecco is the Regional Lead for the South West Regional Cancer Program.
He says cervical Cancer can effect anyone who has a cervix or has ever been sexually active.
Early cervical cancer does not present many warning signs which is why the screening program is so important.
He says once the disease is more advanced or a cyst has grown bigger that is when you might see some signs but they are still non specific.
Dr. Di Cecco says the important thing about having anything out of the ordinary, is that you don’t ignore it.
He says there is a screening program in Ontario and is open to all women.
It starts at age 21 and is done every three years.
